A first survey on the impact of good living habits on the mortality rate of Asian women showed that husbands smoking at home can shorten the lives of their wives. The survey also found that women with many healthy lifestyle habits live longer than women of the same age with unhealthy lifestyle habits.
Researchers at Vanderbilt University in the United States analyzed data from the "Shanghai Women's Health Study", which collected information on more than 71,000 women 40 to 70 years old who did not smoke or drink from 1996 to 2000 And created a "score" for a healthy lifestyle.
The score is based on five factors related to mortality. These five factors are weight, waist-to-hip ratio, regular exercise, exposure to secondhand smoke, and fruit and vegetable intake. Women with healthier lifestyles score higher; women with less healthy lifestyles score lower. During the ensuing nine-year follow-up survey, 2,860 of these women died, of which 1,351 died of cancer and 775 died of cardiovascular disease.
The study found that compared with women who are still alive, women who died in the survey are more likely to be underweight or overweight, obese, have a higher waist-to-hip ratio, do not exercise regularly and consume less fruits and vegetables phenomenon.
Researchers say the good news is that as long as I have the will to change unhealthy behaviors, many of these factors can be improved. For example, it is easier to increase energy consumption by taking daily walks or participating in sports groups and eating more fruits and vegetables. But for the husbands of those deceased women, there is more smoking, which is more difficult to solve.
The researchers pointed out that to change the situation of passive smoking due to spouse smoking, women and their husbands must first increase their awareness of the health risks of smoking. However, for husbands to quit smoking for their wives, they also need to "intervene on a community basis." At the same time, it is necessary to change the general social environment, such as the ban on smoking at home.
